Aftermarket Rims?

I have been thinking of putting after market rims on my BMW, is there anything I should know before I buy some? The bolt patter is 4 x 100 I think. What should the offset be for the rims? Are 18" rims too big? Thank you,
Brian

18's are too large and are going to change your speedo read outs and gearing. I went from 14's (factory) on my E30 to 15's and was very happy. The other issues you are going to experience in the NO area are pot holes. The larger diameter the wheel the bigger risk you are taking in bending it. I have 17's on my roadster and here in Washington state our roads are in good condition, yet I have managed to bend mine once thus far. I would go 15 or 16's but avoid the 17 - 18's.

Technically you could run 18's without any problems regarding the speedo. It is the overall diameter that matters. For 18s with around a 225 width tyre you just run a 35 profile. But the ride height would be harsh, you run the risk of bending your rims as Dan says, and on an e30, anything more than 16's look like shit unless you have the right body kit and ride height.

What you need to know on any wheel (other then the 4x100 PCD) is the width and the offset.

on a 7" wide wheel, minimum offset is about 20 and maximum is about 35. some 35's will just rub the front struts. Some 20's will just rub the rear guards unless you have them rolled. Wider wheels and your available range of offsets reduces.

BD, stupid question: why is the gear influenced by the diameter change? Isn't the tranni switching according to RPM's instead of mph?

I know the speedo will be off but why would it affect the tranni?[???1]

GP as Graham said above if he uses a 35 sidewall his tire diameter will reamin the same, however his tire/wheel weight will more than likely (depending on the wheels used) go up. This additional weight will seem like a gear ratio change, not really be one. The biggest disadvantage is the very short sidewall and the potential for damage to his wheels.

Hey iliad - I run 17's but recommend 16's, but before you start to think we're just a boring bunch of pricks with no style, you should check out these cars which all run 16's and all look tits, and all have the benefits of lighter, more practical wheels:

And so on, the options are endless!!!!!

I thought that 16s would look too small, but I guess its a small car.
I really was leaning for 17s. Where did you get the rims for your car? they look great. What disadvantages do I get with 17s vs 16s?
I was looking at these:

No they were not Eagles, I am drawing a blank at present (old age) I want to say Breyton's but I am not positive, they came from Discount tire years ago. If I can think of it I will post the brand.

iliad, what are BeBeS wheels, are they a cheap knock off of BBS wheels? I would be a bit leary of those. Try Discount Tire or the Tire Rack, they are reputable and see some good wheels. Unless of course you can find some BeBeS wheels locally so theat you can check the quality and weight.

My wheels look exactly the same as the chrome BeBeS wheels except they aren't chrome and are a different brand (still a bbs knock-off, but not quite as cheap looking as those ones).

I bought them from an importer here in NZ and they were made in Australia.

Look like they came from the same mould they are that close in style. If they did come out of an identical mould, then the centre bore is too large - I had to have hubcentric rings made for mine.

BTW, I like the other two better. Dish is goooood!

Be carefull not to go to big or to low. I had loads of s**t with my last bimmer (May she rest in pieces) due to going to low. Went through about six sumps and couldn't get it towed home one day after a diesel/petrol mix up. I got 17s on my new one and they look sweet (I thinks so anyways)
