I flew into Lakeland, Florida today for a quick business trip. When we taxied to the FBO we parked next to this incredible machine - F4U Corsair - 1850 hp 18 cylinder radial engine!!

Parked inside the hangar was the owner's daily ride - merely a new 911 Carrera convertible!

Pics are from my Treo 650, sorry for the low res.

Well, it's no 1850 hp Corsair, but this is my best friend's plane. Yes, he bought it himself and owns it outright.

Downtown Greenville, SC:

Interstate I-85:

The North American BMW assembly plant and Performance Center:

Doing a touch-and-go at the Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport (the commercial airport serving passengers flying to/from the upstate of SC as well as the cargo flights for the BMW assembly plant):

The Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance:

There are few things in this world more fun than flying in a plane like this. Someday, I will have one of my own!

I actually read through a few FAA approved flight 'text books' but I just dont want to spend the $$ to get my pilots license. Would be a great thing to have though.

That's a Cessna 172, I believe?

I have considered getting licensed, our chief pilot is a certified instructor, so I could get trained at a good discount. But I don't have the time to really commit to it properly. And once you get licensed, it's really important to fly on a regular basis - at least 2 or 3 times a month - to keep your skills sharp. I'm happy for now just flying in the right seat when I get a chance. They have let me take the controls after we get to altitude, flying is a blast, and it REALLY is multitasking at its best.

Yep, it's still allowed to take your small personal plane flying whenever you want like that. There are few regulations involving homeland security and such with personal aircraft. The day I took thos pictures, we just took off from the smaller personal aircraft airport in town and flew around wherever we wanted for the entire afternoon. There was essentially no official clearance needed to just fly around wherever we wanted for the afternoon. It wasn't much different than just getting in your car and driving around for the afternoon. We even did two practice landing exercises at the commercial international airport - it was really very easy to obtain the clearance needed to land at the commercial airport.

It seems homeland security hasn't really affected personal aircraft too much yet.

That is my all-time favorite WWII war bird. I love WWII aircraft and this was a monster. The Japanese use to call it the “Whistling Death”. This sound was due to the air inlets on the wings that feed air to the Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engine. When the plane was in a dive the air inlets would cause this loud whistling sound and the ground troops would refer it to the Whistling Death....
