[?|]

Hi all. I am new to the board and to BMW's. Anyway I have an '86 528e, and can't get it to start. Fuel is ok, cam belt is ok, cap rotor wires and coil are ok, but no spark. replaced the computer still nothing.

Anyone got any ideas for me to check? I want to avoid "hit or miss troubleshooting", you know, buying and replacing part after part in the hopes of finding the trouble by accident.

Try checking for a spark with a diagnostic system or a screwdriver in a plug, holding the shaft VERY CLOSE (very important) to the block while someone turns the key?

When you stated “fuel o.k.” are you sure the fuel pressure is strong? May be a bad pump or filter.

Yeah, checked for spark that way, nothing. Also used a known good coil. Still nothing. Not sure about the amount of fuel pressure, but after repeated starting attempts, fuel can be smelled at the exhaust, so raw fuel is making it through the engine. Is there an easy (inexpensive) way to check the crank position (or cam position if it has both) sensor? I am thinking the ignition module is getting no signal.

no spark

System is set up like a domino effect. When key is in crank position fuel pump has to come online and provide pressure then CPU turns on ignition, ignition has to pick up via crank position switch rotation. In most cases you will find faulty fuel pump relay, sometimes you can just jump across the large terminals at relay socket. you should here pump power up for a second or 2. Or have someone turn ignition to start position, with ear to or next to filler opening with cap off you should here pump power up. if you hear no noise then pump is not working or no power to pump.

Are you sure your spark plug wires on are correct? Test the wire that goes from the coil to the distributor itself, any spark?

Everyone, he SAID HE HAS FUEL!!!! Why do you keep saying to check the fuel lines... that is of no help to him since he quite obviously has fuel coming through.
