is it possible to put the 1996 motor into the 1991 vehicle, or are the motors totaly different? are there any differences that will effect the changeing of motors?

any body that can help please let me know.

1991 M42 1.8L, 1996 M44 1.9L. Different engine, but very similar.
Of course you can put the M44 into the E30, but if won't be a direct swap, if that's what you're asking.

Woha, we posted at about the same time. I got the information from the John G. Burns home page and it states that only the 91 318is got the M42, do not know if that is accurate or just a US thing? The 91 318i has an M40 motor and the 96 318i has the M44 which came out in the 96 models. I am sure that they are interchangeable as far as mounting goes, but you will have to change ECU's as well.

Y9ou can see the information on the two cars/engines at the John G. Burns home page.

Is the bell housing stud pattern the same for direct mating to the original transmission between the m42 and the m44? (both sound like very ugly motors)

In the US the M42 was in 3 E30's. From 1989, it was in the 318i(4door), the 318is (2door), and in Canada in the 318i cabrio until 1992. The M40 was a Euro engine with only 1 camshaft -M10 styles-. I'm sure the M44 would drop right in physically, but yeah the ECU and probably some other vacuum lines and or electronics would have to messed with. I would think that the bellhousing would mate right to it, but I think you shoud use the M44's tranny with the M44, and worry about mating the guibos. Overall.... No. It's not a direct swap.

Dammit, Joseph!! I don't know what you think is uglier, my E34 or my M42 engine!! My M42 is prettier than your metal bumpers, I know that much!![shake] haha[;)]!

My question was the non "iS" models, I know the M42 did not come out in the US until 1991, I had a 91 318is and it was the first E30 in the US to have the M42 motor, it was not launched by BMW until 9/89, which meant it really did not show up until the 90 models in non-US cars as we did not get the 90 318is.

From my readings the M40 was sold in the US, it was the Predecessor to the M42, the M43 was the Euro only engine. Sometimes it is hard to figure all this out, but I soourced "The Complete Book of BMW" by Tony Lewin and Wikipedia and BMW Northwest.

Dan, I'm going to stick to my guns and say that the M40 was never a US engine, but was widely used in European E30's, E34's and E36's, whereas E34 in the US never had a 1.8L (thank God) and the US E36's had the M44.
Dan, whatever you read, the M40 was never here in North America. BMW made the 318i with the M10 until '85, and all 318"i" & "is" models after 1989, until 1992, had the M42, all with manual trannies. If the M40 was the predicessor to the M42, what model/year was it in here in the US/Canada? The M43 was also a SOHC junker that was only in Euro cars, based on the M40.

I really like my M42... I'll post some sound clips once she's out of storage...it sounds pretty good. Not nearly as beefy as a M20 with a nice free flowing exhaust, but pretty cool sounding indeed. Good milage too... Gas is supposed to go up to $1.50 a litre this summer:(

The red m42 turbo is a 318is with all proper trim options. Been for a ride in it once or twice. Cold idle map not sorted so runs like a dog idling when cold, but as soon as its moving esp. when warm it fair flys. Often seen boosting along Aucklands motorway putting Evo's and WRX's to shame.

Wicked compressor surge noise on gear change - such a fun car to be in.

Well, this thread been overrun with pictures of ugly 4 bangers!! (n/a ones of course :p )

I love the pics Dan, the original Conforti decal "shark infested" is mad!

Scotty has two options :
1. Boost the m42
2. swap out the m42.

/thread!
