Hoping somebody can help me. I just picked up a 1991, 318i with 67K. The car is extremely clean, and the previous owner kept pretty good records. I have an invoice from a local mechanic that states the timing case upper gasket (BMW P/N: 11141247849) was replaced along with another timing case gasket in Sept, 2004. The invoice states the head was removed, but does not show a new head gasket in the invoice. My current local mechanic looked at the head and said the head was never removed. The timing case is leaking oil badely from the bottom, it appears.
1) In order to change the dreaded Profile Gasket (BMW P/N: 11141247849) on the M42 motor, is it truly necessary to remove the cylinder head?
2) My current mechanic wants to take the timing case apart, examine for damaged parts, and essentially change ALL gaskets, including the Profile Gasket, water pump and thermostat in order to fix the oil leak. He also claims the head does not need to be removed.
I have read several Roundel and Bimmer articles where I believe they claim the head must be removed in order to change the "dreaded" Profile Gasket....
Thank you for your help!
