1998 540i Info

I presently drive an e-36 and am looking towards a 1998 540i with the (i think) 4.4l with a manual tranny...Not any specific one (yet). What kind of performance can I expect. I have heard it is a solid, well balanced package. I would be expecting to do some performance upgrades..Intake, perhaps re-mapping the ECU, or rechipping, etc....anyone have any info they are willing to share?????

thanks andy..it looks like you can go as fast as your wallet takes you...is the 4.4 with the six speed a good package to start from?

I wouldn't drive anything else but a manual. Before I got this 540i, I was toying with the idea of getting a 528i or 530i. Man, am I glad I went with the 4.4 l variety. The V8 engine runs smooooth.

tx Andy...any wild maintenance issues. I like to keep'em up good. What kind of Dinan add's do u have on yours. My regular service tech says that this is his favourite set-up..(4.4 w6speed)...now to find one...hmmmm

Mine has cold air intake, high flow throttle body, air flow meter housing, free flow exhaust, stage 4 software download, and front strut brace.

I looked at an older 540i e39 and if it is still available it would be a great platform for Dinan...

Thanks Andy, I'm working 12 hour nights. I may give him a buzz when I get up...this is right along what I am looking for. It sounds like he keeps his like my 92 325...thanks again

That one looks and sounds nice. that's really low mileage for that year. Be careful not to overpay though. Check kbb.com for some private party values.

I'm used to fast cars, so less than a V8 wouldn't have been up to par for me. I recently bought one and it's not quite as fast as my other car, but It'll do. It's very smooth, and the handling's good. I love it on the highway.

I have called him a coupla times..phone tag....sucks. The car appears to be a beauty...but that is a little high, i agree...did you actually drive it when you were looking?

I drove mine. I bought it from a dealer(not a BMW).

are you looking for a manual?

what mileage, price range?

I live in canada, close to the border. Definatly a manual...price depends on the car, mileage, etc. I finally spoke to Larry in SC last night (The car does sound like a good one). He really isn't in a hurry to sell, but is holding his price...Zip Code is 48060,
