how hard is it to replace a clutch? How much can i expect to pay. I think this one is worn.

The car has 75000 miles roughly. I dont know how hard it has been driven but the owner says the clutch needs replacing....

He is asking around 6000 - 7000 for the car. It was used as a company vehicle is no longer being used. It just sits in storage. Im thinking about pickiing it up but i dont want to if the clutch is going to cost me a trillion dollars.

has anyone had this done or done it themselves.

If you can buy a 1998 Z3 for $6-7,000 = BUY IT!!!!!!! The clutch will cost you anywhere from 500 to 1,000. However, if the car looks and runs good your still ahead in value by $10,000.

Audible is correct. I had a clutch replaced in my 98 M roadster and it was just over $600.00 using a Sach's clutch and Pressure Plate, plus all the extras. I had it done by an independent German car specialist shop who I trust. Is the car a six cylinder or a four? The fours car be purchased for considerable less than the six. Nada lists the fours at 12-15k and the 2.8 at 14-17k, either way you win!

the "needs a clutch" story could be a cover for some internal trans problems. i would get more of the story out of the owner about why he thinks it needs a clutch. if he says it comes out of gear, that's a trans problem and it's fairly common. and fairly expensive. if not abused, these clutches can go 250k and more, i've got 92k on mine, and a supercharger, and it doesn't slip. that's the factor involved in needing a clutch, it either slips or it doesn't, you either need a new one or you don't.
