Hi everyone, after a long search I've just bought myself an '85 323i manual sedan, not exactly what i was originally searching for but the price was too good to pass up.

It's going to need a top-end rebuild on the current engine eventually but I'm trying to weigh up my options. As it stands i can rebuild the top end and put in a custom fabricated turbo system for around $4,000(AUD) or I could find myself a 2.5 litre block teamed with the eta crank and new internals. the stroker engine is proven and there is no shortage of knowledge on the engine however it will end up about 50% more expensive than the turbo without making any extra power.

Has anyone here ever seen/driven a turbo 2.3litre M20?

By the way I don't want to start an arguement over how much a turbo conversion is going to cost, yes $4,000 is cheap but I will be fabricating everything myself. My only reservations are with the capability of the standard bosch fuel system to cope with an additional 60-70% power loading

Hey mate. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to BMW ownership. It's good stuff.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of 'charging BMWs because you miss the responsiveness of an NA motor... That said, turbocharging your engine is a (relatively) cheap way of accessing more power. Like you said, it is a cheaper option than the stroker kit and you will probably get more power anyway. I would just worry about the extra strain on the internals and drivetrain as a result of a drastic increase in power. Are you going to run a light pressure turbo or are you going all-out? Are you going to beef up the gearbox and diff to cope with the extra power? Will you be getting some bigger anchors to go with the extra power?

Those are the questions I'd be asking before turbo'ing your M20, and if the benefits are not really significant then there are many other things you can do to get a little more performance (relative to stock) without the headaches.

Good luck. BTW, where in Melbourne are you from?
