2.5 or 3.0

I'm ready to make the plunge as soon as my current vehicle is sold. I'm looking at the 2.5 since I can add more options. With the 3.0 I won't be able to afford to add very much. Is there that much difference. It looks like I would just be paying for the extra horsepower. Thanks- bear with me, I'm new to this.

I have a Z3 3.0 and I have driven a Z3 2.5. I really didn't notice much of a difference. Maybe the difference comes in at higher speeds like over 100. I think you maybe refering to a Z4 thou. I think they are pretty much the same type of engine for the different model types. Anyway, one thing I have found out about the 3.0 is that parts are not as accessible for it. I can find plenty of parts for the Z3 but for the 3.0 is is limited, not scarce but more limited. Maybe that can help you decide also.

Just drive both and see what you think.

Thanks for the info. That's what I was wondering about. I should have said a new Z4-2.5. That's the one I think I'm going with. Don't get a lot of chances to drive over 100 - lol.

There isn't much of a performance difference except in acceleration there is a bit more kick (obviously to the 3.0) - timing difference is about 7 secs in 2.5 and 5.2 in the 3.0 - it is noticeable though - go with the 2.5 they're pretty much the same engine if cost is an issue.

IMO, the 2.5 engine in the 3-series with an automatic transmission just feels winded...as if it needs more power. If you're the type that likes to accelerate quickly, get the 3.0. If you just want the Z4 for cruising around, then get the 2.5, it should be just fine.
Have you considered any Z4 alternatives? For a Z4 2.5i price, you can get a fully loaded 350Z Roadster, which is packing 287hp.

Yes but it is a 350Z - you don't get the BMW driving experience.

Looked hard at the 350Z - keep changing my mind, but the 350 is very nice, lots of power.

You can't compare a 350Z with a Z4!!!!! Totally different cars, different engineering! If you want more power for cheap, get a Mustang Cobra!
