2004 BMW M5

Here is a nearly undisguised prototype of the next BMW M5, which was caught testing at the Nürburgring race track in Germany. Due out in fall 2004, the new M5 will be powered by a V-10—displacing 5.0 or 5.5 liters—that is rumoured to deliver in the neighborhood of 500 horsepower. Transmission choices will likely include a standard six-speed manual and BMW’s Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG).

0-60 doesn't really count anymore, its such a pathetic measure of performance when
u get into such powerful cars as these

but yeah this is gonna really put the hurt on some of the competition i bet, but i say its fugly

I don't think that is a picture of the new M5. Couple reasons. All M cars have curved side view mirrors. M3 or M5. Also, there is no vent on the front fendor. That is a signature I believe BMW is going for now on all M cars.
Finally, the rims are different, front back (doesn't mean much) and the rear of the car is quite high off the ground.
Are you sure this isn't a normal 5 series prototype picture??

I like the new M5, even if this isn't it. I saw some pics of it (i think) and the brakes where amazing. I think it is going to be really cool in real life. So far i've hated all the new bimmers when i see them on the internet, but in real life i don't mind the new 7, and i like the new 5.

All prototype cars are masked. This is a M5 but it is mostly tested for the engine and suspension. Mirrors will come later.[:)]

BMW is taking the SMG transmission (not manual, and not automatic) and putting them in the regular 3 series... but not in the M3? They should be coming out with a new 3 series in a few years anyways

I must not understand you correctly... Are you saying BMW is taking the SMG tranny (I assume SMG II) and putting it in normal 3 series BMW's? It's already in the M3 (option, not standard), so what do you mean its not or do you just mean its not a standard feature?? Guess I'm just stupid and lost since I don't get this..

No, the new M5 is gonna have a 6-speed manual and SMG II transmissions available, as of now. Currently, the E46 M3 has SMG II transmission available. The 330Ci and Z4 3.0 currently have SMG I transmission available. There is a difference between SMG I and SMG II...basically, SMG II is better; quicker, smarter, basically aimed for higher performance. For the next M5 featuring the SMG, BMW is thinking about utilizing a dual-clutch system, such as Audi's DSG transmission available on the Audi TT 3.2 Quattro (Coupe & Roadster).

New M5 will have a SMG III (3rd generation.)

I forgot where but I saw picture of the current 5-series with a new bumper, side skirts, and rims, done up by AC Shnitzer and it definitely has that nice aggressive look, so no doubt the new M5 along with its increased power and amazing handling will have a look like it will eat your young.

Do you know if BMW is actually going to utilize that dual-clutch setup that I mentioned? I read in a magazine, that BMW is considering it, but I'm curious if they will actually employ the idea.
