Just doing a post for a friend of mine, he has a 2005 BMW 530i that he's concerned about. It seems to be getting an average of less than 12 mpg according to the gauge, and he noticed that it's going through way too much gas during normal driving situations. There doesn't seem to be a leak of any sort, but he also observed that the engine itself seems to be strained as has trouble maintaining speeds like it used to. It also hangs on revs more than it used to, even during light driving. If anyone's got any insights on this, we would really appreciate it. Thanks!

The car is too new for a sensor to fail, but it is possible.

It sounds like the MAF sensor may be faulty.

Or perhaps he got a very bad tank of fuel?

The vehicle should be under warranty, so he should just get it booked in at his BMW authorised service center.

I have a 2004 530i, and it gets around 16-18 in town and 26 or so on the highway. I just had to have my transmission replaced at only 40K. The car would not shift going up hill, and drove rough. The first sign was poor gas mileage, and then I noticed it was lurching, the only way I can describe it when I would coast going down hill. Also it was rought to start off from a dead stop, almost lagged a second and then kicked into drive hard and fast. Then one day at the stop light it just wouldn't go and it just reved. Then the warning came on that my transmission had failed. Thank God it is still under warranty because BMW paid to replace it and it runs better now than it ever did since the day I bought it brand new. Take your car in and have them check it over, the warranty will cover it.

If he's from New York like you, it's normal, the BMW I6 is very hungry in NYC traffic and at speeds below a steady highway cruise. It's a 3500lb car, with a 225hp engine, keep that in mind, and premium is a fast burning fuel, it's going to burn gas, 14 sounds good for NYC traffic to me. I was getting less with the 330i, but I could get 30mpg highway at 75.

I have a 545i, and that is true, Louisiana is pretty flat, but I easily get 26 mpg on highway @ 80 mph... In town, that is another story...! I even have been scared to check it...![bigcry]
