I've recently departed with my beloved 85 3.25e; a small encounter with a mountain in the eastern townships of Quebec left her slightly crumpled. I would love to replace her with an 88 ix I found, as I feel some 4-wheel action would have deterred the aforementioned accident. However, neither my Haynes guide nor any Bentley guides seem to deal with the ix. Are the engine layouts similar, just different drive trains, or am I looking at a completely different animal altogether

Engine layouts are the same. Front suspension is essentially completely different - no interchangeable front suspension parts. xi front suspension parts are much pricier than the standard rwd counterpart.

Along with like 5 times more drivetrain pieces.

if you are getting an ix you have to love it... because you will replace so many parts in it.... it will cost double of waht you pay for it upfront and yes the drivetrain, front suspension, wheels and sideskirts are what make an ix diffrent [8]

What's different about the wheels? Are they wider?
