hey,

I have a '83 318i e30, with a (almost) dead engine, looking at either getting it replaced or rebuilding it.

now, if i rebuild, i would get it bored to a 2L, and get the internals etc strenghtend port and polished and other various things (turbo going on at a later stage)

not sure how effective this would be. does any one know of a 318i that has been transformed to a 2L, im sure there would be a few around i just havent seen the result of one. And how they would respond to a turbo?

thanks for any repsonse/ sugestions

I have a '84 318i that I have thought about doing the same with. I ended up getting a '79 320i 2.0L engine out of a junk yard for $150 that I plan to rebuild and throw into the 318. The factory 2.0 had a longer throw crankshasft at 80mm instead of the 71mm of the 1.8 in the 318. I think thats what the difference was. They had the same piston size at 89mm. The big difference was that the 2.0 had a double roller cam timing chain while the 1.8 had only a single roller cam timing chain. Bmw did turbo a 2002 back in the 70's. So the engine can handle it for sure. Just do some seraching on the web.

Go to Ireland Engineering, they have lots of mod parts like stainless steel valves, cams, pistons for the M10 engine. You can custom order pistons too so if you want to lower the compression for a turbo.

I want to turbo my 318 too if I go this route. However I may just buy a S52 and put it in there for fun. Depends on the cost of each operation really. I just want a balls fast E30 really.

my thoughts exactly... lol

hmmm thats a great idea, are there any newer factory 2L 4s or are they all six cyl? i never thought to go out and buy a 2L, but i never thought about the old ones either....

is there much in turboing the engine? cos in the 1.8L there isnt a lot of room in the engine bay....

are you doing anything to the gearbox or diff? i heard that a e28 5series LSD will go in e30s with out too much trouble, thats what i would like to do.

thanks for the reply, and sugestion.

Im afraid the m10 in my 85 is shot. the owner who built the turbo'd motor rebuilt it before adding the turbo & went .050 over. he said it was really quick. he sold it & a teenage kid (probably a member of the ERC.. extreme rice crew) that didnt know how to drive a stick & blew the motor in a week.

If it is I was thinking of engine conversion.. but i think now i will see how far i can take an m10. being new to bmw myself im going to have to do a lot of homework & ? asking. but i think it would b cool to have a mid 80's 4cyl that is putting out 250+ hp on the street. if i have to get into the engine.. ill go .060 over, stroke, lower compression pistons maybe a bigger turbo but probably not. 4.10 LSD. This is mostly just rough guesses now. I'll find out this sunday as to the extent of the damage & what needs to be done. oh ya.. a water/methanol injection system would be cool too.

I know I am going to get a rieger body kit & relocate the intercooler so i can get my headlight back. lowered on bigger rims (still havent decided 16-18s depending on popular opinion performance wise). the interior needs redone as well.

but for $250 what do u expect.
