I can't help you with ABS as I have never owned an ABS-equipped e30. (I presume you are asking about an e30 this time as e21's didn't get ABS)

The shifter slop is due to worn bushes in the shift mechanism. There is a knuckle joint with a bush where the shifter attaches to the tranny, and another on the end of the shift stick. Then depending on what year vehicle you have there are other bushes where the console that supports the mechanism attaches to the tranny.

You don't have to remove the tranny to replace them. but you will have to remove the prop shaft and drop the tranny mounts a couple of inches to gain access. Even then its a simple, but fiddly job.

Look here (This is for an e21, but early e30 is exactly the same)

abs sensors are located on the edge of the front wheel bearings... you can see the wires going to each one if you turn the wheel to full lock... you'll see a sensor held in with one or two hex screws mounted on the back of the strut housing. I don't think there are any at the back, but I could be wrong... I've never looked for them at the back.

All old e30's have crappy shift bushings in my experiences... it's usually in the lower part of the shifter where it attaches to the linkage. Graham is right and wrong... it's an easy job to change the shifter itself, if you have a set of internal snap ring plyers... On 86 325e's the shift carrier has two bushing mounts on the tranny... they are actually made out of poo and rubber.... mostly poo though. They break easily, and might be a source of play. You don't even have to lower the tranny to change these like you do on later model E30's ( the carrier is different, and harder to reach). (that link isn't working for me)

The plastic part that the ball of the shifter pivots in can also wear, but the spring under the snap ring is supposed to take the slack.

Most of the bushes are easy to remove, and need very simple tools (screwdriver) and/ or, just your fingers to push them out. the plastic bushes can be driven out very easy using a drift punch and a hammer!

Above posts are super helpful.
