325 won't start

My wifes '02 325i wouldn't start this morning. Upon turning the key the interior lights go on but there is a high pitched "whirring" sound. The engine never turns over. I'm waiting for the roadside assistance to come. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.

Check your battery, see if cables are tight.

I say the starter isn't being engaged properly...

Could be a starter defect. On a 02'? I dont know?

Thanks for your replies. I carelessly put the thread in the wrong forum, but it was great of you guys to give opinions. Turns out it was a dead battery. Car has only 24 k miles on it so I'm a little concerned about reason for the discharge, but the alternator checks out and there does not appear to be any shorts. We will see. Wife has a bad habit of leaving all electrical on when she turns off the car so when she starts up in the morning the radio is blaring and the ac is on etc. Quite a strain I would think.
