Has it broken??? If so, then your motor is probably toast.
The 6-cyl (M20) motor in a BMW e30 is an "interference" engine. This means that the valves and the pistons occupy the same place in the top of the cylinder. The cam controls the valves to open and close them at the right time. When they open and close as per design, they are not open when the piston is at TDC (Top Dead Centre). The timing belt drives the cam. If it breaks, then the pistons will hit the valves. It is usually cheaper to replace the entire motor than to rebuild the damaged one.
My condolences if this has happened.
Cool user name BTW.
