My last car was a 93 318is. I bought it for 9 grand, in '01 with 92k on the odo, and put about 22k on the car. I ran up over a $5k bill just in REPAIRS (not customizing.. merely fixing the car). I'm looking into a '98 528i with 79k for $16k. I'm hoping it will be considerably more reliable than my old bimmer. My questions.... is the five series worth it? Has anyone had exceptionally good or bad luck with the car? What have u done to it (in terms of repairs...). Your opinions are greatly appreciated and valued much. Thanks for your time, from one bmw fanatic to another.

I just bought a 2001 525i from a dealer, and it had 24k miles on it. The only problem that I have had with it is one of the daytime running lights burnt out. It's a great car. All my friends tell me that to maintain this car is gonna cost me.

Just my opinion....I would definately try to find something with less miles. Doesn't matter what kind of car you get. Any car that is almost to 100k mark is bound to have mad wear and tear issues, even if it is a 98. I drove a 95 MB E220 with 40k with only minor repair issues(tires, exhaust, normal stuff). A friend purchased a 2001 E270 MB with 86k on it and he was forever in the shop. Maybe just a lemon story....maybe not. Me experience is LESS MILES=LESS ISSUES
Good Luck...Peace

toofan is right...but if you buy a car with higher mileage, the price is lower. Just get yourself a good deal on ebay, be patient, and set aside some money for replacement parts and service. That way you are prepared to spend the money on repairs on wear and tear, and won't be frustrated and disappointed. Over time, you should have a tip top machine which you acquired at a lower price!

528's are worth every penny as long as...

As long as you maintain the car, it will last a long time and won't give you any problems. I am a proud owner of a 1997 528i which now has 175k miles; yes you read it right... more than 175,000 miles, but still strong. I'm trying to beat the record by going over the 200k mark :) will see about that. I haven't had any major problems with it other than maintaining it as every other car should be maintained.

Engine still smooth, nice and quiet, very happy with it. By the way I'm the third owner of this car.

if u do buy high mileage, most things get replaced between 90,000 and 120,000 so avoid that span. picking up a 150,000 mile car with records shows that major fixes were taken care of

The service history is key! I picked up a 89 525i with 225K on the clock and put 11k on it in 10 months and had minimal repairs. My current 325e had only 135k and I had to put 1k into it in the first 2months. However if you wait for the right car (325e was mint and only cost 1900 the repairs were expected) you can find great deals.

Not sure what your current situation is as far a affordability. But like said before, be patient and try to find another with lower miles on eBay. Patience paid off for me when I found a 2003 530i for $34K. It was a steal! Just have a sharp eye and patience. In the meantime, keep saving your cash. By the way, the 5 series are known to be very reliable when kept up with the little maintenance they ask for.

I just bought a 2001 530i with 20000 miles last month for 28k. Ok, it did come from an Infinity dealer, but still has full warranty until 9/05.
