I recently purchased a 2002 525i having previously owned numerous japanese and british cars. Just last week while cleaning the windscreen the driver side wiper metal strip became dislodged from its rubber casing and before I could fix it or replace it I had to activate the wiper during a rainstorm - the result was a very ugly scratch mark on my windshield. I cannot believe such a thing possible with a BMW having had similar problems with previous cars but never having damaged the windscreen in this way. This is extremely upsetting. Is there any way to remove the scratch, which is superficial but very obvious, without replacing the windscreen?

If the scratch is light enough it may be possible to have it polished out. Anytime a wiper arm is run against the glass it is most likely going to scratch the windshield. I have damaged a few that way in the past, once on a Honda and once on a GM product, this is not uncommon.
