Hi guys,
I just bought my dream car 1998 540i 6spd. Of course I want to take care of this car the best I can. Premium gas, good oil ect. The car has 110K Km but I'm not sure if the 100K big service had been done or not. How could I find out? What should I look for? What exactly gets done in this service? [scratch]

Thanks for the help.

Is it marked off in the manual? Call BMW NA, give them the vin and ask them, they are pretty cooperative.
I, too, recently purchased a 540i. I do have the receipt for the 100k mi service which was done before I got it. If you have it done by the dealer, brace yourself for the cost. My sister-in-law paid around $1500USD for the service. It did include some extras (rear brakes and possibly a couple of other things). I was surprised that the spark plug change was so pricey. I can get more details if you'd like. If it were me, I'd either DIY or find a good independent to do the work.

Regarding the BMW NA comment . . .

My sister-in-law gave me all the receipts she had. But, I don't think everything was there. Does BMW NA have all the records stored centrally? She had the work done mostly at two dealers. Can you request or purchase a complete printout of the service history?

All I know for sure is that they can tell you that the service is either up to date or not. You could ask them about providing records. I would visit the two dealers the previous owner used, they should have all their records locally.

Yeah. I thought so. Your previous comment had given me hope that I could save a few hundred miles traveling. Someday, this stuff will be centralized with a web interface that we all have access to (kinda like tracking a shipment with Fedex). In the meantime, I guess I'll have to pay the dealer a visit if I think it's that important. Maybe I can call them and see if they can fax or email it to me.

Thanks.

If I take out the spark plugs can the color of them tell me if they were changed with the 100k km service, assuming the service was done? By the way, while at the topic of spark plugs what type do you guys recommend. I hear NGK, Bosch. Which one is better?
