New 6 Cabrio A Scunny Delight
Where would you expect to spot the first undisguised BMW 6-Series cabrio out testing? Near the company's German HQ? In the searing heat of the desert or frozen wastes of the Arctic Circle? The last place you'd look is the North Lincolnshire town of Scun-thorpe. But that was exactly where the car was parked up - at the back of a hotel and golf course complex.
Car-mad Harry Cadwallader, 15, saw it and immediately knew that he'd got a scoop on his hands. "I was actually doing work experience at the hotel and spotted the BMW hidden away round the back. I think it's funny that someone had taped over the badge on the boot, but left those on the alloys visible," he said. What Harry didn't notice, until we pointed it out, was the car next to the 6 - a Jaguar XK cabrio, which was being used for comparative testing.
By far the most distinctive aspect of the soft-top 6 is its never-before-seen rear window and finned roof, which closely resembles that of the Ferrari 360 Spyder. It's a sheet of vertical glass with canvas-covered fins stretching towards the back of the car, like the flying buttresses seen on some old churches. At the flick of a switch, the bootlid flips up and swallows the folding top, while the back window glides electrically into the rear bulkhead. It can pop up again to double as a wind deflector.
The power-operated hood and stiffened bodyshell are the only differences between the soft-top 6 and the coupé, which was unveiled at last month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The snub nose and flame-sided flanks of the tin-top also appear on the convertible.
The two cars will be offered with a choice of petrol engines, starting with the 3.0-litre straight-six taken from the
5-Series. There will also be a 272bhp 3.6-litre and 333bhp 4.4-litre V8, both of which will be available from launch.
Despite the additional stiffening and weighty hood mechanism, the open-top 6-Series will still be lighter than most of its rivals. Although the main shell will be made from steel, the front body panels, bootlid and suspension subframe are aluminium. BMW reckons the 6 cabrio will be a great drivers' car, thanks to a tuned 5-Series platform and developments such as active steering.
The soft-top is set to debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, and will appear in UK showrooms next summer. It's likely to cost from £40,000, making it a direct rival to the Jaguar XK8 and Mercedes CLK. Prices are expected to be about £3,000 higher than those of the coupé model.
There will be a diesel in 2005, plus a 500bhp M6 offered as a coupé or cabriolet. It will have more than 700Nm of torque, thanks to the same unit that will power the next M5, and wear a £65,000 price tag. Look out for it next time you're in the S****horpe area...
