when first starting car after it's been sitting for a while, the gears don't seem to go in until the car is running for a while and warms up, then it's fine. it's mainly 3rd and 4th. any ideas?

1997 540i 6spd.

thanks

Did you, at any one point, get the oil in the transmission changed? I Think the getrags (which you probably have) all require ATF fluid - but sometimes people put MTF in to help with synchro performance during the summer. Once it gets cooler out though, the MTF won't perform well until warm, which causes gears to be stiff during cold starts. I do this to my car (Manual transmission fluid during the summer; Automatic transmission fluid during the cold months) and it's definitely hard to shift if you use MTF in the cooler months.

Transmission needs to warmup just like the engine. The shift knob requires more effort and feels more notchy when shifting until the car is fully warmed up.

Correct (somewhat, since its just the oil that needs to be warm), but the type of fluid can make it more difficult than normal.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of aftermarket fluids out there, but you are typically just supposed to stick to the OEM fluids. I know that if you use aftermarket tranny fluid on the Subaru WRX, the synchros absolutely hate it.

Btw, I can't speak for all cars, but for my whip, the shifting is awful until I am fully warmed up.

using "oem fluids" or "non-oem fluids" (if there is such a thing?) makes ABSOLUTELY no difference.

I use redline too - and just being redline or not won't solve the problem if he's using MTL fluid in 30 degree weather. I have a feeling you just need to put some of the proper fluid in. Get redline or that purple stuff (don't remember what its called)

My transmission has ATF in it, and I have absolutely NO problems shifting even on 20 degree mornings (car always sits outside). I tried MTL in it once, and that thing was nearly impossible to shift until the transmission fluid had warmed up. Went back to ATF, and she's silky smooth at all temps.

Hell yeah there is dude. I just told you the WRX example, and a few guys on G35Driver switched to a 3rd-party tranny fluid and they said it made their shifting much worse....they had to switch back to original fluid.

I have the Redline D4ATF in my transmission and it is much smoother to shift than with the stock fluid. I have Redline 75W90 in the diff..and of course Mobil 1 in the heart of the beast...vroom!!!

I agree with epj3. I just replaced my transmission fluid after 87k miles with Royal Purple SynchroMax and it to me made a world of difference. I was having same problem as you. 94silverbullet, have you ever replaced the fluid?

Of course, mostly 91 as that is the grade of most "premium" fuels here in my area, although we do have a 76 station selling Trick Racing fuels at the pumps, you can get 114 octane..Wow!
