If the fan isnt kicking in when the engine is getting hot then you will know that your fan clutch is rooted. You can do this by getting the engine up to normal operating temperature and letting it idle for a while with the a/c on. If the fan won't engage and the engine is getting hot then its buggered.

Alternatively, if the fan is not disengaging when the car is just started ie: cold, then it's jammed on and the fan will be cooling the engine when its not needed.

no no no.... the fan turns with the engine no matter what.

when the engine is getting hot and needs cooling then it will turn faster.

there are many threads about this. (troubleshooting) run a search for fan clutch.

i didn't know 318's had clutches though. I though they had eletric fans. But then again how would i know.

I think Pete’s talking about the auxiliary fan.

Michael's right, there will be a difference in air movement. When the car is cold, lift the hood and feel the air pressure behind the fan (obviously not too close). Then when the car is at operating temperature (temp needle in the middle of the gauge) or running hot do the same thing. There should be a noticeably higher pressure of air that the fan is moving. Another way is to compare the force it takes to spin the fan when the engine is cold and hot. The two previous ways are less dangerous. You can also use rolled up paper and slowly apply pressure to the fan while the engine is running, the fan should keep moving.
