I am trying to replace the rear metal brake line on the passenger side of an '85 325e and I have run in to a problem. I do not have any idea how to disconnect the metal line from the two rubber lines. There is so much rust I can not even tell how the two are held together. I tried using my six point line wrenches but none of them fit. It does not even look like there is a hex shape at the end of the metal line. How do you get these lines apart?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

from the bently manual....
15.3 A typical brake line-to-brake hose
connection: To disconnect it, use one
spanner to hold the hex-shaped fitting on
the end of the flexible hose (lower right
arrow) and loosen the threaded fitting on
the metal line with a split ring (“brake”)
spanner (upper right arrow), then remove
the spring clip (left arrow)
....I'll be trying to figure it out myself tomorow or wednesday when I replace all my flex hose w/ steel ..rebiuld all 4 ...and paint them...hoh

Thanks for the reply. You would not happen to have a picture of this, "split ring (“brake”) spanner"? I was just wondering if it was the same wrench I was trying. I think my lines are just rusted to nothing.

How many rubber lines are you replacing? I was thinking about doing the same thing but I noticed there is a rubber line at each wheel and then a rubber line in the back under the middle of the car.

Have fun

Good luck hoh! I finally removed the metal line last night and it came off in four pieces. The ends of the metal lines were so rusted you could barely tell they were a hex shape at one time. I ended up cutting the metal line right behind the connection and then using a line wrench on the rubber hose and a pair of locking pliers on what was left of the metal line. I took some pictures but my camera ran out of juice. I will post pictures of the mess later tonight.

Have fun

well my day was a flop as well....removed the brake lines w/ 8mm and 16mm i think...yours must have been rusted up....mine came off easy but I removed all the calipers and took the seals out to rebiuld only to find out that bavarian autosport has sent me ones for a different car
(not sure whose fault that is )...if you cut the line you should be able to use a flairing tool to put the nut back on the line. and no I dont know what spanner the bently manual is refering to but as i siad i just put a wrench on each nut on each side of the clip. hoh

I just took my 325 out for a 30 mile test drive today. I ended up having to bend new lines for most of the brake system. I have new lines from the front of the car all the way back. The original lines were far too rusted. I also had to rebuild the front right caliper. I think I spent about 15 hours total on the project. Now that the brakes are working it is on to the shift linkage.
