When driving the car will heat up about 3/4 of the way up the gauge and even past that if you don't turn on the heater which seems to cool it down a lot. This tends to happen a lot while sitting in traffic or driving slow around town. It occasionally happens on the highway as well. Do the '85 325e's have a known over-heating problem that is easily fixable? What should I check first? The clutch fan? Thanks to anyone who can help me figure this out. Peace. ~Stoney

sounds to me like it may be the auxilliary fan resistor, the resistor is made of a ceramic material and sometimes cracks . also check the connection to the fan. the resisotr is located on the bottom of the shroud to the fan on my 87 325e facing the front of the car somewhere around the 5 and 6 oclock position ,

I'll back Justin up on the fan clutch. check it first. Also, the rad is original, it might be clogged up and not exchanging heat very well, and old coolant doesn't help either, but the fan clutch is a pretty common problem with these cars.
