So Winter was pretty good to me and my 87 528e. Then the weather changed and so did the car's performance. I am getting random (cold and hot) problems with stalling. When the car begins to sputter (completely non-responsive to accelerator) it may konk out completely, or rev right back up. Regardless, it then will completely stall within a minute. I was stuck on the side of the road last Thursday for 20 minutes until the car would start again and idle without cutting off again.

The question for over a year now has been is it electrical (sensors, relays) or actual fuel related. Here are the facts:

-Car will stall or fail to idle at start up in hot or cold engine environments.
-Fuel Pump relay has been changed.
-Unplugging the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes and then replugging will resolve this issue 90% of the time.
-Been worse lately in traffic and hot weather while idling.
-Noticed tonight that the Manifold Pressure Sensor cover is loose and able to fall off. Also sensor is not making contact to 3 'pins' consistently since it is floating in it's container.

Could the manifold Pressure sensor be it?

In my experience here and other places, there are many things that cause this from fuses, relays, fuel pressure regulator etc.

The main suspects now since all other items have been ruled out are:
Manifold Pressure Sensor
Air Intake Sensor?-near boot
Main relay (has not been replaced)
Alternator (possible current or regulator issue)
Misc Sensor

Other items going on at same time --
1. Occasionally, inspection light comes on and Tachometer dies, then, it comes back on and off randomly.
2. Car idles rough. Kind of a gurgling idle up to about 1500 RPM.
3. Occasionally, all gages dies and car begins to accelerate out of control...as if it were zombie-fied. Very scary at 80 mph.
4. Just noticed also tonight that there is a canister of some kin with 2 hoses coming out of the top. The canister is located in the front right side (while seated in car) of engine near headlamp. The hose going from the canister into the somewhere on the manifold seems to bee cut (not attached). Not sure what it is or what effect it would have on this. The hose seems to have a metal core.?

I know this is alot to go on at once but let me know any thoughts on this. I appreciate any serious input in advance.

Thanks,
brent
