Well im going to get a 96-97M3 in about 2-3months and I was wondering what should I know before I get one? Just some of the basic stuff that im looking for is what kinda miles can I get on the car before the motor starts dieing along with the tranny. What are most of your paying out for insurance and so on. im a 23 year old male so I know insurance is going to suck but having a ball park idea would nice. And I know this sounds dumb but what are some of the little things that may bother you about the car :just to give you an idea: on just about all 91-95 MR2’s the e-break cable sticks in the winter time. And on 93+ Probes the CV joint breaks easily (I snapped 4 in the last 7 years!) but then again that may have something to do with my driving habits.

And last what kinda options is there for modifying the car turbo kit,s fuel components, motor modifications, ext..

Thanks for any info :)

Wow I posted this in the M3 area and 16 people looked at it and yet on replies! So is this something every other person asks?

well, bmw's I6 is an engine they have used for a very long time, that should tell you its high quality. but if you check the E36 forum, you'll see that most of us have somewhere between 80-200k miles on our cars, and they run awesome. When my dad bought his 525, they told him he should get 250k easy with basic maintainance.

your car should run forever essentially.

make sure the car has a metal impeller in the water pump.
ball joints are notoriously bad as well.
the clutch pedal squeaks but that can be fixed if it comes up
ahhh, those are just minor things, the main point is that M3's kick major ass.

i'm not sure about insurance though.... sorry

I had a '99 E36 M3. No major problems, just a couple minor thinigs such as faulty oxygen sensors (fixed under recall) and squeaky clutch pedal were all I can remember having to deal with. The car kept running very strong until the day I said good-bye to it.

I paid about $125/mo for insurance. It actually got down when I switched to an E46 M3.
