My '99 540i Sport has 49k miles and I need to replace my rubber. Current Dunlop SP Sport 2000E's are sticky and quiet in the dry, but a little hairy in the wet. I'm trying to decide if the new Bridgestone Potenza SO-3's are worth the additional cost. Tire Rack rates them as quieter, stickier, and much better in the rain.

Anyone have any experiernce with the SO-3's, or other rubber?

See signature, I've had great results with MasterCraft Avengers, less expensive Cooper built tires.
Oh and the M is WAY stickier with the Toyo Proxes.
I think the treadwear rating on the Mastercrafts is like 280.

Worth the $$$

I had a 2000 540 6sp that I gave up about 2 years ago. I went through 3 sets of rear tires in 24K (I drove it hard). By far the best tire that I tried wet and dry was the Bridgestone S03 Pole Position. The stock tires suck and the Michelin Pilot Sports are great for dry traction but don't measure up in the rain. I just recently got a used 03 540A (wife wanted to drive it too so I couldn't get another stick) and can't wait to replace the tires.

Cheers,
Andrew
