A/C Knocks then Goes Away...

Hi. I've got a '97 528 with 99K and this year when I turned on the a/c, I noticed a knocking sound or "clacking" that goes away after a few moments.

I took it to my local guy (not a BMW shop) and he told me the clutches are going and that I should expect to pay a minimum of $700 for repair.

I've read somewhere that it's best to have an a/c problem diagnosed at BMW (instead of a local unaffiliated mechanic) because of the complexity of the system. I want to make sure the a/c is working properly and am willing to spend the money -- just wondering if I need to.

Anybody have any advice? Thanks!

Not sure why you need a BMW mechanic, although I use an indepenent BMW sho for work I cannot do, AC is pretty much AC. A rebuild compressor is about $600.00 so $700.00 might be right. I would get an estimate from both BMW dealer and Independent.
