Guys.
Hope everyone has a happy new year! I have a weird issue on my transmission (1998 Non-VANOS 5 Speed-Automatic 540i with Dinan Supercharger) and I need your words of wisdom.
2 days ago (Tuesday, the 9th)I took my 540i for a little drive to the beach and on the way back, I realized that the car is acting a little weird. So I got off the HWY, came to a complete stop and gunned the car. Usually this car would launch like a rocket, but during the take off; the car acted extremely slow from 4500RPM~6700RPM. I then tried a few more times and in mostly 1, 2 & 3rd gear. The car just doesn't go above 4400RPM (very slowly with a lag on both RPM & MPH gauge). I thought I fried my transmission but the car is still doing fine below 4500RPM and the "Transmission Failure Warning" did not come on.
I then disconnected the battery and reconnected after 10 minutes but it didn’t help (usually this does the trick when I over-revved the engine on the dragtrips which triggers the check-engine light and slow acceleration, however, this rarely happens in the past).
I called my shop and they said I might have killed my transmission. So they wanted me to tow the car in.
I called the tow truck this morning (Thursday, 11th, January, 48 hours after the incident) and just when the tow truck arrived, I figured I should take the car for a spin to see if it gets any better. And strangely the car is “CURED”, acted normal in every gear and accelerates just like before.
At this point, I’m happy (well, less repair and hustle) but very frustrated. I mean does this mean the car just fix-by-itself? I just came back from a crazydrive and the car is fine.
Anyone has any theoretical and & technical feedback on this issue? Also would the problem come back again? Or the computer just reset the program? Anything would help.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Jimmy540i
