the dealer just told me that my ac compressor was going bad and that it needed to be replaced. does anyone know if this is a frequent problem in e36's. i swear my ac was working just fine before i dropped off the car. it just sounds suspicious to me that the ac compressor would go bad coincidently. btw, i brought in my car for repair on my moon roof....how the hell did this ac issue come up anyway? to my understanding having the AC compressor go bad on a BMW is just as uncommon or common as other cars. Its not a major deal with E36's, because i have never seen it sited anywhere else that this is a huge problem.

as for the moon roof i have no idea, that sounds kind of shady if they are digging around the rest of your car when all you requested was a moon roof. shady or great service.

what it comes down to is this: how well do you trust your dealer
do you really car if your ac compressor is "going bad" because either way it will need to be replaced, whether its kind of bad or super bad. personally, unless i could really tell a difference i'd let it slide until you actually have no AC.

It depends on where you live. Out here all cars have problems with AC, Batteries, And rubber parts because of the heat. It is not as majopr a problem in other parts of the country, but it has the potential to be quite expensive.

the weird thing is the ac is still very cold. the service advisor said that the tech smelled smoke coming from the compressor but i couldn't smell it. it turns out that its covered under my warranty so it would only cost me the $50 deductible. should i replace my compressor even if it appears to be ok? it definitely gets very warm where i live so maybe replacing it might not be such a bad idea but i'm not sure. what do you guys think?

For $50? Have them do the work. My BMW dealer washes my car EVERYTIME I take it in for service. I'd get the work done AND have the car washed for $50. Think about it. [hihi]

No kidding. $50 is better than waiting for the warranty to run out or when you really need it and it decides not to work. Get it done now and be done with it. $50 is not much when your talking a BMW air compressor.
