I am expecting delivery of a new 2006 530i in mid April. There are several dealer packages they have offered and I am looking for some feedback as to whether they make since based on the cost and value added.

1. Wheel/tire warranty, 3 years= $735, 5= $829; covers performance run flats and aluminum wheel damage.
2. Signature finish- covers interior/exterior, Kevlar coating; protects seats, oxidation, bird poop, discoloration, etc. 5 year protection= $491
3. Door ding protection, repains dings and dents on vertical panels. $300
4. 6 year, 100,000 mile maintenance upgrade, stay with car if you sell = $2000
5. Window tint (metallic) $200

The tint is a must, but based on some postings there are specific films that are recommended.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

1) Generally a waste of money unless the area you live in is particularly bad in terms of potholes.
2) A total rip off, stay away...
3) "protection"? how? also a rip off I would say. $300 will buy you a lot of ding repairs.
4) Wait! You can buy extended warranties at any time during the initial 4 yr/50,000 mile warranty.
5) $200 for metallic is OK, but as you point out, metallic on the rear window will kill your radio reception as the antenna is in the rear window. Go with a non-metallic tint (ceramic based) like Huper Optik or some other brand. I have the Huper Optik on my 545 and love it.

Yes. They began production in March of the '06 only. It has the new engine and the costs are exactly as described on the BWMUSA "build your own" page. I had the dealer confirm as well.

If the extended warranty can be purchased anytime in the first 4 years, can you suggest a place where I can get pricing? The dealer will only say that it costs more if you purchase later on. Thanks,

Go back to the service dept. At my dealer, there is a display with cards listing prices for bumping up your warranty to the 6 yr/100,000 mile level. For my 2004 it is $1,195 (or something like that, I'll have to get the card).

Thanks. That price is a heck of a lot less than I was told. They want $2000 for the extended through 6 years. Let me know if you find a price card. I will also go straight to the service dept at my local dealer and see what they quote versus the salesperson.

Got the card from my car, the $1,195 was right. Flier clearly states that: "This upgrade can be purchased at anytime during the original Full Maintenance period." Tell your salesperson to stuff it. The card gives a phone number at BMW USA to call (800-334-4BMW), give it a try, but for a car as new as yours, they may not even quote rates. I have a PDF of the card, but I can't attach it here.

Wow, as I actually sit here and read the fine print on the back, this is ONLY for maintenance and does NOT cover engine and transmission or other "wear and tear" items. So sorry, but this is clearly not an extended warranty! Be careful of what this guy is offering you. If it is a true full extended warranty, get a copy of it before signing and read the fine print about what is covered and what is not!

Of course! The dealer wants you to buy it NOW. The guy that sells you the warranty gets the FULL commission for it. Yeah, tell him/her to stuff it. The same goes for the "Signature Finish" What a crock. That's a 100% profit to them - don't do it. YOU take care of your car and YOU keep it clean.

On the extended warranty - everyone I ask tells me an extended warranty is a waste of money (in any car), but with a car like a BMW, with so many things that can go bad (and that ARE going bad) - I just don't know...

We'll may be getting a 2006 550i when they are released, and I may consider the extended warranty - but will not buy it until I see how the car "behaves" three or so years down the road.

And BTW, the 525 and 530 were being released as a 2006 model early THIS year with the new motors. The 550 will come out as the 2006 model in October or so - available for ordering late Summer-early fall 2005. I have a message from BMW of NA about it that I got through the dealership here in Darmstadt, Germany.

Cheers to all.

SF.
