I have hunted and read through a couple dozen threads trying to figure out what the M package offers exactly and found this link: http://www.kenrockwell.com/bmw/540options.htm

However can I please get some advice on the difference between a 2002 540i 6-spd with the M-sport package vs the 2003 540i 6-spd without the sport package. I like the look for the style 37 rims on the M package and of course the nicer front and rear bumper but does the 2003 without the package be a better pick?

Does the 2003 have the M5 shocks even if it does not have the sport package, and is that the same as the suspension upgrade on the 2002 sport package?

Assuming that price and mileage are comparable on both which would be the better pick? Any further clarification on the differences would be much appreciated too.

Thanks.

I believe all manual 540i's are considered "sport package".
The automatics are the ones with the sport package option.
I am not positively sure about this though...

Hmmm if that is the case then is the option that the 6-spd comes with called the M-sport package? This is the one that adds the style 37 rims and the M front bumper and a different rear bumper... exposed exhaust tip and what I am not sure about is the suspension... does that get upgraded to? Is the upgrade on the 2002 same as the 2003?

I have read through tons of threads but haven't found a definitive answer on this.

I have not heard of the option of having M bumpers for the 540i's. I think that is the BMW OEM M-Technic bodykit you are referring to?

The 540i sport package and 6-speed come with lower and sportier suspension compared to the automatics.
I would think there were no differences between the 2002 and 2003 models.
