Has anyone had to replace one?
90 E34 525i

After about $1600 of repairs and lots of headaches (long story)....I'm still getting the "check engine" light and the car starts to slow and won't accelerate. My mechanic seems to think it's the AFM?? (correct terminology leaves me). Is this something I can replace myself? Otherwise, am I looking at another expensive bill?

Yes, it's a very simple snap and fit replacement, but you have to reset the lights.
Don't know about the E34's but the E39's costs over $300.

Oh, btw...it's the "Mass Airflow Sensor" - MAF

Were you having the same "hesitation" problem or was there another reason. I will probably have it done, just because I'd better go ahead and have the fuel filter replaced too. The car just doesn't seem as "snippy" as usual, and the reluctance to accelerate once the "check engine" light comes on scares me....I drive to/from work about 45 miles each way.

Mine had the service engine soon light come on so that was part of it....I didn't' really have the stalling but the car had done that a couple of times prior to changing it, its not done that since
