Finally found out why the check engine light is coming on. How hard is it to replace the airflow meter? Any mechanics. I definitely have patience, but if I've got to dismantle the engine....then "Mr. Man with all my money" will have to fix it...trying to save some pennies.

The 525i. I've been having some sort of "congestion" issue this past week. Check engine light comes on and the car begins to hesitate. If I stop and press the accelerator it clears up and I'm on my merry little way.

I've been waiting on two estimates from shops in MD, but no ones called back. Any suggestions

Cool website I sent u huh? Did you know about it? Great stuff to know before you talk to the dealers about parts etc.
Odd that the part is ended, try putting your BMW VIN number in and doing another search for parts.

Awesome site!

So one mechanic says he doesn't think its the Air Mass/Flow Meter...besides he says, I can clean it myself. I hope so. Its time for emissions and I would hate to find a "bigger" issue. I'll search the site a little more in depth...

We have a self test to check the MAF on the E39 M5, can you get any test data up on your car? Ours is initiated by pressing the right and left hand buttons on the dash cluster and holding for 15 seconds or so then test no. 6 will do a maf test by wide open throttle to the red line. Dont know if you have any way of getting these "secret" codes up on your car. I could do it on my 95 850i so maybe you can too.

no you need to be able to get into the cars ECU if it has one, then set the test ready then do it, if you cant get into your ECU then there is no point, if you go to an independent they usually have comp systems that they can get into the ECU and test it for you for a few bucks, it will tell you if the MAF needs changing.

Ecu, if it has one???????????

You guys have him replacing some unnecessary expensive shit!
I havent told him to replace anything, that was the dealer, I just told him where he could find the stuff he might need. I dont know anything about the older 5 series, just the E39 M5. So butt out. [chair]
BTW Just what is a 535"M"? You either have an M or you dont, and it seems like well, you dont [thumbd]

I can take it to get the "diagnostic" for ~ $100. Went to get the emissions today...the NOx is too high...so it could be the sparks, catalytic or air/fuel mixture......so off to the races I go...trying to find out where to start......

it's a quick way to say 5 speed, since there were less than 2,000 5 speed 535i's built. Don't give me a fucking lecutre about that. Ask a single person around here, I would be the absolute last person to pretend to have an M.

Plus if you don't know anything about older 5 series, why the HELL are you posting in a thread about and OLDER 5 series?!?!? [scratch]

And by the way - "you either have an M or you don't" not exactly. Ever hear of M-tech?

lol I have! My suspension is derived from the 325i Sport (M-Tech specs) but I do have a gay little M-badge on the bootlid that I really want to remove...

BTW, Eric I'm not saying you don't know this, I'm just trying to be facetious [:)]

M5AD probably doesn't know...

No need to use profanities, unless of course you are incapable of educated communication.

Because I dont see an M5 section on this board, maybe you could point me in the right direction?

Yawwwwwwnnnnnn just another M wannabee.

I was merely trying to help some guy when nobody else seemed to answer his thread, I told him how to find the parts if he needed them by pointing to the OEM website and explained after being asked that on the E39 M5 we have a way of testing MAF's, I told him that I didnt know if his car, being older, would give him this option, but maybe he could find out.
Just trying to be helpful, not requesting some lard-ass hick redneck to stick his nose in and rile me up, so like I said before Mr Wannabee butt out.
By the way "lecutre"? Are you the water boy?

Oh dear...

We all wish we had M-cars it's just that some of us haven't been so blessed. I would give my left nut to have an E39 M5 and I would gladly give both for an E34 3.8 M5. But just because I don't have an M5 doesn't make me any less of a BMW M enthusiast. And the same goes for anybody else on this board, especially Eric. You would do well to take in some of the info this guy writes.

So I'm very happy you have an M5 (shit, I would LOVE one) but don't let that make you think you're any more of an enthusiast than anybody else here.

And please post some pics of your M5 when you can so i can drool [thumb]

Yeah you are right my bad, sorry to you and epj3, and anybody else who may have got upset about this, just I hate it when I try to help somebody and a third party accuses me of something else. Not sure what but the profanities did it for me.
A full and unequovical apology to all.
I realise I am lucky to have an M5 and shouldnt gloat so once again my deepest apologies to all, I am not such a bad guy as the last few posts may have seemed.
So I will post pics, but feel like I would be rubbin salt in if I do it now [cheers]
