So I saw this ad for the Fram Air-Intake which makes the engine sound and act really powerful but I realised that I cant install one of those on my E39 because of the shape of the original air-intake in the engine. What brand do you all recommend that can fit in the engine as well as give the car a boost of performance and make that roaring sound at the same time. Thanks.

You probably won't gain much if any HP from an aftermarket intake. The BMW engineers did their homework. You may even LOSE HP if there isn't a heat shield. They're basically there for sound.

Keep dreaming! Only thing these do on any of our cars is a better sound, and maybe SLIGHTLY better performance... by maybe half a percentage point. BUT it is worth it for the sound IMO. I would look for some kind of ITG foam filter with a shield...

Well to tell you the truth, it was the sound I was looking for. I know very well that the BMW guys know what they are doing and it would be spectacular to really increase the performance with just one mod. The sound of my car now is nice but I would like the 'roaring' sound.

Off-Topic: I dont know if you all saw the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie but I watch it every time just to hear those 3 M5's. [drinking]

Too bad they got destroyed. [:(]

528i have a sound baffle in the intake towards the fender. You have to remove the plastic wheel liner, and other intake parts to get to it. Another BMW board has instructions.
But if you remove you'll get some sound.

They weren't ACTUALLY M5s although represented as such. Sorry to ruin the dream !! On another board we disected the footage and could ID false dual exhuasts etc. Prob 528's with a few exterior mods to look like m5s. In any case, 3 good 5ers blown up!

I'm with them, the e39 540 intake is pretty efficient. If you do an intake for sound just heat shield it that's all. Consider the resonator delete after the cats in the exhaust. Very cheap and effective growl from what many people report.

Add: In fact here's a link from a new post. A guy just did it to his (the resonator delete in the exhaust) and here's the result

You are right they werent all M5's.....they were 5er's with AC Schnitzer kits on them. There were no "false" exhausts made either..in the chase scenes they had single exhausts....at least one of them was probably a "real" M5. ANYWAY he has a 520i which is a totally different beast than a 540i..it is a 150ps motor(soooo sluggish IMHO..LOL...but it is STILL a 5er). You can get an K&N 57i Kit(doesnt come with a heat shield) or ANY kit for a 523i or 525i. The area of the engine and the hose sizes are the same(or near enough so you dont have any really BIG mods to make it fit). The engine is the same size as the 320i engines(my intake was actually for a 525i and I have a 523i). Try BMC Carbon Dynamic Airboxes, JC, Racing Dynamics(either one...doesnt really matter), or the aforemention K&N 57i kit......just make sure to have a heat-shield(many places show how to self-make one)
