I've been looking at a 1984 BMW 323i which has Alpina badges on the trunk and the hood and wheels. I have been told by the seller (not his car) that it is a genuine Alpina. Does anyone have any idea if they made a 323i Alpina, and if there was, what are the differences between it and the usual '84 323i ? This car is in nice condition except for a small rust hole below the driver's seat.

What changes were made to the suspension and drive train from the E30 to the E36 ? Any difference in wheel base or track?

Any help or opinions would be helpful.

Sorry Kirby but I cannot agree.

1) and '84 Alpina is an e30 Alpina. you are linking to e21 cars which finished production in 1982. The last e21 Alpina was made in the late 70's. There is a 323i C1 which is a e30 and was made in 1984 as one of your links says, but it looks nothing like the one in the picture. Fuzzy - a true Alpina will have the Alpina body kit and wheels and will have other Alpina badging and you'll notice differences to the engine bay over a standard e30 - esp the rocker cover. Also a stock 323 has about 150 BHP - the ALpina version has 170 or so.

2) E30 and e36 drivetrain and suspension are very very similar. With a couple of extra bits you can bolt the entire rear subframe from and e36 on to an e30. You can also swap over hubs in the front. Lots of guys do this to get the bigger brakes from the e36 and also to get the 5-stud hubs of the e36 to allow better wheel selection. It is common and easy to do.

early e36 316's and 318's used the same motors as the late e30 316 & 318.

e36 6 cyl gearboxes fit e30 motors and vice versa - you just have to use the flywheel, clutch and starter motor for the gearbox you are using.

They are more similar than you think.
