The car is a 1999 528i
FM reception is fine, but AM is full of static and gets worse as the RPM's rev.
Is there a ground or maybe an antenna problem?
This is my first BMW. Thanks

I own the same year and model bimmer for past 7 years and my radio reception is actually better than my other car, newer model.

This sounds like some sort of grounding problem. Do you know if the alternator was replaced on that car, was there any body work done around the trunk area? I would have someone look at the wiring.

I have the same problem with my '99 528iT. AM radio was very good and suddenly became weak and noisy. I've yet to solve the problem.

However, this seems to be a somewhat common occurance. Others have been able to fix the problem by tightening the antenna (coax) connections at the radio and the antenna amplifier module, which is located in the C-pillar. There also is a history of some coax connectors going "bad".

Thanks for the replies.
On closer inspection the worst AM station seems to be 640 (in L.A.), a conservative
talk radio dubed "zig heil on your dial".
Although it has some sports and a good computer show, I can do with out it.
I'm lovin this BMW more and more.
