so, my aux fan turns on when I have the a/c on. Is the aux fan supposed to turn on even if the a/c isn't on? at operating temp and at higher temp, i have turned off the a/c and noticed the aux fan stops as well. is this normal? '84 318i, thx.

I think it has 2 speeds, shouldnt be very loud with the a/c on I know they do turn on though just on a slower speed.
is the aux fan suppose to run when the a/c isn't on though? mine only runs when the a/c is turned on. thx.

Yeah that is ok. It should only come on with the a/c i believe. Mine does anyway.

ok, great. then i have no problem if it is only suppose to come on when the a/c is on. that is, except the fact i can't get the thing to work in high (i've done the jumper test and can get the low speed to click on, but not high speed. must be something wrong with the wiring. when i test K6 (high speed) i get constant 12v current, but testing the same pins on K1 (low speed) i do not get any current. i'm thinking this might be the problem. maybe my fan is running constantly on high. anyone know which two wires go to from the aux fan switch to which pins on the K6 and K1 relays? thanks

Mate i'm stumped on that one. My car will be different from yours b/c it's the facelifted E30 so i'm not sure. Perhaps check out bmwe30.net - they have a lot of troubleshooting guides. That might be able to help.

Good luck.

Theres two switches on the top driver side of the radiator that control the aux fan when the engine runs hot. One is for high temp and one is for very high temp and makes the fan run faster.

Two wires go to each switch. One is constantly 12 v and one goes to the fan. When the temp goes up the switch closes and sends 12 v to the fan. If you pull the wires off either switch and put a jumper between the two wires the fan should go on. You'll hear a big difference between low and high speed fan.

If there's no power check fuses 3, 18, 19, and 20.

Good luck.

i did the jumper test, but only the low speed wires trigger the aux fan. the high speed wires do not trigger the aux fan. the high speed wires have 12v though. i hear clicking noise when i jumper the high speed wires just like i here when i jumper the low speed wires, but as i stated, the high speed wires jumpered do not turn on the aux fan. all fuses good. when testing the socket of K1 (low speed relay) and K6 (high speed relay) i notice that K6 is getting a constant 12v feed. do you know what each pin on the K1 and K6 relays do?

would a bad thermostat cause my car to overheat?

thx

Certainly, a thermostat that is stuck closed will cause your car to overheat. I posted a thread on how to change the thermostat as i literally did it just the other day on my car. The Behr thermostat and gasket only cost me $50 all up so its a fairly cheap excercise and might be worth consideration. Check out the thread i posted first though.

Good luck.

the thermostat looks like an easy fix, i guess i'll just replace it along with the water pump. but i'm not sure if either is faulty. the hoses going attached to the thermostat are all hot when the engine is at operating temp, so i know there is coolant circulating through. would a bad water pump cause the engine to run hotter when idling versus when cruising down the highway? would a thermostat open partially, in which case not allowing enough coolant to circulate?

i drove around and the temp guage read 3/4. i stopped and squeezed the hoses attached to the thermostat a few times then i drove the car again, the temp dropped and ran at 1/2 for a while in stop and go traffic, but eventually climbed back to 3/4 (this is with the a/c on).

sorry for all the questions, but i like to trouble shoot this way before i take a part things and to find out that the parts are good.

thx

Yeah it sounds like its your thermostat. Like i posted in your other thread your thermostat can be working only partially and this will mean that the rad hoses are still hot - creating the appearance that your 'stat is working.

If your temp gauge is all over the shop then it is most likely a faulty 'stat. It is THE most important thing when it comes to cooling the engine and the a/c and, indeed, the heater can have an effect on engine temp if the thermostat is out. Like i said, check out the thread i posted on the 'Thermostat Installation Tips' in the E30 forum. Just remember that your engine is the M40 and it should be even easier for you to change it than it was on my M42B18.

Let us know

thx. that is what i was going to do. it's an easy fix and it probably needs to be changed if it isn't the problem anyways. yeah, i just have to unclamp three hoses and that's it.
