I'm getting a new phone / plan this month. I have a Sony Erricson. Personally, I don't like the phone too much; the only thing I love about it is its versatility; I've dropped in a puddle of water, thrown against a cement pillar, dropped numerous times, driven over it!! and it still worked!

I had a motorola, the conventional one with the camera; dropped it once and it never worked properly since. But I do like the razrs. How's the signal and sound quality?

which sony ericsson did you have??!?! i had the T616(t610) and it was soooooo solid, it got smashed against everything, i found it in the middle of an intersection once after leaving it atop a friends car.... dents all over, worked like a charm. as a gag i used to get mad at people and throw my phone against the wall in a fit of rage. then laugh and laugh as i watched the person's color return to their face while i pieced my phone together knowing it would work. well one day... it bit the dust.

so i upgraded (or so i thought) to the T637 (t630) and it is a very nice phone as well, i still have it. but, it didn't have near the build quality of the t616.

my razr v3c is great so far, it feels solid and i love the profile of the phone. i'm not a big flip phone person, but above all else i can't stand for external antenna's. so the razr was a good trade off. however, the v3c (available from altell and verizon) i have is from verizon, and vzw loaded its own gui on it.... which sucks HUGE ASS. it is slow, and it is a brew app that causes a loss of battery life. there are people who have flashed to the alltell firmware (which was leaked about 3 weeks ago) but they no longer have mms or web capabilities. BUT the good news is that because verizon's gui is a brew app, someone will most likekly find a seem edit to disable it without losing a ton of functionality.

signal and sound quality are great.

I had AT&T (which was bought out by singular) and there service sucks; every month there are calls that I never made; the signal cuts in and out. And I loose my signal walking within my own apartment. I'm thinking of switching the Verizon. My parents have verizon and most of my buddies have verizon and I have not heard any complaints yet.

Any thoughts on Verizon?

verizon is the evil coorperation of all cellphone providers. their support in the states is unmatched though, which is sad.... because its very existance is a move against a more global service medium. but yeah, out here in montana i had gsm and it worked alright, but verizon i get service anywhere. the problem? whenever i leave the country i am sol.

so yeah, verizon isn't bad, if you really want to switch and you are looking at something like the razr there is a really sweet thing you can do. i found this out too late obviously, but you can get buy a razr (v3c) off of motorola.com and then submit the invoice to verizon and get a $100 rebate.... without a two year contract. wow i wish i would've know this, but that brings the retail price down to about $250ish, which isn't bad vs. a TWO YEAR contract along with $200 for the phone.

I love my Motorola V710. I had a Samsung clamshell before this phone, and it was a piece of crap in comparison. I think Moto makes good quality phones. I also really like Verizon. Yeah, they are the evil huge corporation of cell phone services, but Verizon's cellular service simply works, and that's obviously the most important thing about a cell phone. The ONLY time I've ever NOT had a signal was down in a valley in rural Idaho. Every other time that I've ever wanted to make a call, I was always able to, and I've traveled all over this country with the phone. The customer service is pretty good too. Several of my friends have Cingular, and they can walk across the room and their signal drops to nothing. I can make/recieve calls anywhere inside the huge hospital where I am a student, whereas my friends' phones drop their service the minute they walk through the door.

I have a samsung POS, battery lasts like 19 hours now. It's absolutely horrible, but someone I know (and who justin knows!!!) said they might sell me their V710 after he's done with it for cheap, so I'll probably sport that. As long as I can send my daily 40 text messages while I'm at work.

Here are my experiences in PA
-Sprint was horrible, absolutely horrendously horrible. I can't believe they are still around, more of a scam than anything.
-Cingular horrible coverage but the rollover thing was neat. Text messages rarely went through
-AT&t (got bought out by cingular, what do you expect. Same problems as above)
-T Mobile mom and sister had it. It worked but the phones were cheap and reception was very unreliable. Plus they ALWAYS got network usage errors.
-Verizon Like justin said, it simply works. Only time I don't have a signal is in my friends basement. I've talked to friends on my drive all the way from lancaster to williamsport and never had a hiccup. Network and text messaging always works 100%. Just poor choice of phones up until recently. Verizon seems like less of an evil corporation than ANY of the others IMO. They maintain and structure their networks the best, and will help resolve any problems you have. They are the only company who is not out buying or selling part of themselves left and right to grow larger and have a larger userbase. Either way, even if they are evil, their shit works.

I'm still tied to my CPT8000 (Motorola Timeport P8767). It's kinda dated in design and features, but it's a good phone and works well in the car.
I'm tempted to get the Razr as well.

Oh, and Verizon is the nation's Number 1 rated provider in Consumer Reports subscribers survey. I switched to Verizon from AT&T and have had no problems since.

I get good coverage with Cingular. There are places, like my neighboorhood, where I get a bad signal, but nobody I know gets a signal there. The radio doesn't even work there. I think it's just interference with the top secret government labs that are around.

My comments are practically worthless in this thread. Its just full of bad experiences.

Designwise, i dont think phones can look any better than any siemens models. They make GREAT LOOKING phones.

I pretty much can't stand clamshells, and generally stick to open face and sliders.

Hence, i ended up getting a Siemens S55, only to find out that a couple of days after the year's warranty, the number buttons basically fell apart on me without any droppages or any such things because im pretty careful with my phones.

Thinking that was probably a one off defective model that i picked up, I upgraded myself to an SL65, which was my favourite Siemens phone at the time, so i was absolutely overjoyed to have been able to pick it up. However, again Siemen's brilliant build quality handed it to me and a few days after my year's warranty ran out, when i slid my phone open, it would turn on but the screen would die on me sometimes. A week or so after that the screen died completely and that was the end of it!

Because of this, and budgetery concerns, im forced to work with my OLD OLD school Nokia 3390 brick. It's a phone, and it works, so it has already trumped both of my Siemens Mobiles....

--
Performancewise, i had the same issues with both of the Siemens phones, which was, pretty much unusable talk time, about 2 to 2 and a half hours on AMAZING days, 1 and a half to 1:45 on good days. The volume of the person i called was very very low and i wasnt able to make it any louder, hence half the conversation would consist of me going "what?", and the biggest problem was the receptions. Both of the phones had aweful reception compared to my friends' erricssons.

I was a HUGE fan of Siemens phones and would always try to argue for them whenever my friends messed with me about em, but sadly, even though i still think their designs are awesome (Just take a look at the SL75... what a beauty), the phones are basically a bunch of crap. I will wait and see what BenQ does with the quality of Siemens phones, but for now, don't even consider buying one, because they are hopelessly unreliable. Don't let the looks fool you LOL

I've always liked the clamshells... its more phone in a smaller package, larger screen and stuff. I wish they would put more useful features in rather than a stupid ass useless camera. [rolleyes]

I got a Palm Treo 650 about a year ago. Best phone I've ever had hands down. It does everything I need in one package:
- Quad band GSM - Works great here and in Europe
- MP3 Player - I have a 1 Gig SD Card loaded with music, enough for me. I use that mostly on plane trips.
- GPS - Bluetooth wireless GPS and Mapopolis with voice navigation. 1G SD cards for US and Europe. Used it in Europe, worked great navigating the streets in Madrid, Spain and Milan and Genoa, Italy, both on foot and in the car.
- Of course, it syncs with Outlook and keeps all my stuf current flawlessly.

Yep, same here. I think I've used the camera in my phone a total of about 5 times. It is a totally worthless feature.
I agree that for the most part they are useless. But I have found it handy on business trips where I need to take some pictures of a control panel or factory installation that I am proposing modifications to. It's quicker than drawing a sketch and I can refer to the pix while I am engineering a new design.

What also sux about camera phones is that some businesses and government bodies ban them from their sites, and want to "hold" them at security.

Thank the lord you never had the Palm treo 600! Its been the bane of my life for the past yr. Im on my 5th one now, yes 5th! Theres a class action lawsuit vs the Palm 600 and its terrible performance.

Im also forced to use Sprint (company policy) but thats about to change here in the next month we switch to Verizon and I can upgrade to the new Palm 700.

Oh fyi Nextel service across a large area of the US bites. (Had Nextel before Sprint and now theyve merged into one giant pile of crap) [:(!]

the moto slvr has a transfash card, the razr does not. but i wouldn't use a phone as an mp3 player regardless, i like a phone for being a phone, not a camera, or anything else. but the verizon gui has a calender that is differnet from the moto calender, and it sucks major ass. i just need a sexy phone, thats all.

Well I am getting tired of my current samsung phone, VERY tired of it... I messed around with the Blackberry 7130e today. Very cool phone, so cool I'm going to see if I can acquire one! It would be very nice to have at work, lots of down time there to talk on AIM, read news, etc. All other providers around here have pretty bad...no, VERY bad reception, so I'm not sure I want to leave verizon. They are awful expensive though. Kirby how do you like the size of the 650? Is it small enough to put in your pocket without it bothering you if you're walking/climbing?

The 650 size and weight is good for me - 90% of the time. From a usability viewpoint, I like the size - I'm 6-3"=big hands, so tiny phones are a pain for me.

As far as carrying it, for business use with a belt holster style case, or in a coat/jacket pocket, it's fine. It's OK in your pants pocket without the case, but it is slightly bigger and heavier than ideal. It usually doesn't bother me, but in your jeans pocket, if it rings, you WILL answer the call just getting it out of your pocket, by accidentally pressing the touch screen - and sometimes you don't want to take a call after you see the caller id!!!

I HATE that! You need only sneeze and you'll answer the call on a Palm!
