So I managed to crack my oil pan today. Was getting some food at subway and just happen to pull to far forward on a curb that just happened to be just the right height. Got the car home before it dumped all its oil thankfully.

Anyone out there got an old oil pan? I guess all the oil pans from the E30 6's work except for the IX. They are not cheap I am seeing...

I might be able to get this one welded, but I am not to keen on that idea. I there is a crack in it, no chunks missing. Later

You can repair it yourself depending how damaged it is. I don't know how but I know it has been done - and they claim the 'patched spot' is stronger than the pan itself.

This is the worst part of the design of the E30. It amazes me how the oil pan and part of the steering rack are the lowest hanging parts on the car. And to make it worse, the lowest part of the oil pan sump is ahead of the front axle centerline, making it fairly easy to scrape it on driveways and curbs and stuff. I'd like to meet the person that ok'd that for production back in the 80s, because it's just plain dumb.

The front edge of my oil pan has scrapes and gouges all over it because of this stupid design (thankfully no cracks).

You just need bilstein HD shocks. Your car will sit higher [clap]

anyone ever made an aftermarket pan for our cars? It would be nice. I knew I would hit the oil pan someday.

The crack doesnt look too bad. I know I guy that can weld alluminum too. So this weekend I am gonna pull the pan and take it over to him.

The funny thing is that I was planning on pulling the pan soon to replace the leaking pan gasket.... but not this soon. I would like to have done this in a couple months when its warmer..... but crap.

Do I gotta loosen the motor and lift it up a little to replace the oil pan?

I'm almost positive that you have to lift the engine. I would think you should be able to get enough clearance if you just unbolt the two engine mounts and use a hoist to lift the engine up a few inches.

Yeah, if you have access to someone who knows how to weld aluminum, then definitely give that a try!
