The latch itself is broken. When this happened to me I took it to the shop that used to do my dirty work. I think he said they pried it open in order to replace the latch. I imagine it's pretty tough.

mike, let us know how you get in it. i fear mine is going on its last leg because it seems that it takes further to put the latch for it to come lose now and i would appreciate a known way to get into it.

Glovebox

I think the guy I bought my car from had the same problem. He sold me the car with the glove box detached from the underdash, and with a brand new lock to replace a broken one. I put that part together but does anyone have pics or know how this glove box gets attached to the under dash? I see the 2 straps (one pin missing)..I see the the large metal hinge with the oval holes..but how does it attach to the glove box?

Ok guys i pulled it apart. the best way is to use KC Ron Carter's guide. the only advice i would give is use as wide a pry bar as you can. I used a flat head screw driver and have made a complete mess of the lip of the glove box. other than that like the guide says be patient and put alot of pressure on it. Oh and DON'T stick in a screw driver to "Poke around" for the catch. I did that as well and shorted all the interior lights and stop the dials from working!

its a bit disconcerting that you have to bend the metal cradle out of shape but it seamed to work (only problem is that BMW parts dept is closed until monday!!
