2003 540 a question or 2...

Anyone tell me about ....

The 540i 2003 with the M series trim.

Ive been told there arent that many in the US. Ive also been told its price ($43k) is not likely to drop at the same rate as a regular 540.

The one im consdiering belongs to a neighbor. Its Silver on black 24k miles nav system.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It is true that a 540i with the M package is more valuable than without the M package, however I do not believe it depreciates any slower than a regular 540. The difference is that the initial price was higher therefore the resale price is higher. What options does the car have? As to how many were sold in the US I do not know off hand, but I doubt it was so few that is going to make much difference.

Is there some place you can go to find out how many of a certain model were imported or produced in the US?

As for the options, hard to say, I can tell you it doesnt have heated seats. It does have a 6 cd changer, a Nav system and memory seat I think most everything else.
Let me know if you know of a particular option it should have.

Now and heres the good part, I can tell you since I purchased it!!! that it drives great, somewhat softer power delivery than I expected and it seems to shift up way too soon. Also if you punch it from a rolling start it drowns for a split second before the power kicks in. Since its under the warranty and BMW service plan im going to have that checked out by the dealer.

Is it a six speed or an automatic? I have a book that tells how many models were made and they do not list a 540i with M package seperately from the 540i. I am not sure you can get that specific information. Call BMW NA and ask them.

According to "The Complete Book of BMW", by Tony Lewin, there were 3,306 540i's produced in 2003, compared to 6,689 in 02, 9,460 in 01 and even more during the earlier years. So in 03 there were less produced than ever before during the e39 run. No problem with the feedback if you need any more information from the book let me know, it contains all the specs, etc. It is a great book, I got it for Christmas!

Here's a dealers description of it:

This is the BMW M Sport package, including 18 M-parallel polished wheels with staggered offset (wider in the rear), M5 style front and rear bumper valances, special door sill plates, a drivers footrest and steering wheel with the M logos

I believe it came as standard with any sport package ordered in 2003 but I could be wrong.
