About two months ago, I filed an appeal with SCCA concerning the classification of the Z4 in A Stock for Solo II.
The cars currently listed as being in A Stock are as follows:
Audi S4 V8; M Coupe/Roadster; M3; M5; Z4; Camaro SS; CTS-V; Corvette C4; Pantera; Cobra SVT; S2000; XKR Coupe; Maserati Coupe/Spyder/Gran Sport; E55; SLK32; SLK 350; Lancer Evolution VIII/RS; Firebird Trans Am WS6; 911(993); Boxster/S; Saleen Mustang; Cobra (any); and Supra Turbo.

Admittedly, a few of these cars, even with big hp, are pigs, dogs, etc. Weight is a major factor in autocross, but most everyone knows that. Currently, the S2000, probably the lightest of this bunch, rules the class with a competant driver. But one thing sticks out to me as setting the Z4 apart from these cars. It has the lowest hp rating, even the 3.0, among this group. Ok, so it has more torque that an S2000 or a lowly pre-06 Boxster, but it also weighs considerably more, especially when compared to the S2000.

Well, I received the lastest issue of Sportscar today and the request was denied without comment. What really fries my butt is that SCCA seemingly rolls over for Mazda, particularly for the RX-8. It is assigned to B Stock, has arguably 13 hp more than the Z4 3.0, less torque and about the same weight. The S2000 was, previous to this last year, in B Stock. The new RX comes out and cannot compete. Now, it becomes the class of B Stock after the S2000 was bumped up. I know this sounds like a lot of wining, but I ask them to look at the National Runoffs this year for evidence. The ONLY Z that ran was a Z3 that finished last in class (not stock).
I simply don't know how SCCA can ignore the evidence. At worst, if they assembled a table of power/weight ratios, they would deduce that they had erred. The Z4 is a fast car without question, but when it comes to Solo II, the proper class would be B Stock. If anyone else reading this sees any merit to this, fire off an email to Tasha Goodale at: tgoodale@scca.com.
Interestingly, in 04, the Z4 was classed in B Stock. In the Runoffs, the highest placed Z4 finished 17th, behind 16 S2000s! Both were moved to A Stock in 05. Go "figger" that one out

I feel your pain, I have noticed this and other "anomalies" (to say the least) in SCCA classing. They claim that they actually do test runs of the cars to come up with classing, but really... how are they going to get all those cars and run them under the same conditions, year after year, etc? I haven't looked real hard, but HOW they come up with the classing seems to me to be about 40% technical specs, 25% guessing, 15% random, and 20% favoritism or other influences.
