Are there problems on the way

I got my 1st bmw 5 months ago 530d .Two weeks after i bought it the fuel pump failed,the garage i bought it from replaced it free of charge. i went under the hood about a week ago to check levels of oil and water both were ok but i noticed a line of sludge at the top of the water level line my suspision is the head gasket is going or gone also there is a slight mis-timing problem are these related

This "sludge" you mention what color is it? It could simply be that no-one serviced the coolant like you are supposed to. I would flush the coolant and replace it. Is there any water/coolant in the oil? What does the top of the oil cap look like, if you have a head gasket problem you will commonly get a frothy brown sludge there.

thanks for the respnse. the colour of the sludge is a greeny brown colour its only about 3 mm thick i checked the oil filler cap and the coolant cap the are both clean
