because AT fluid and MT fluid are basically the same (someone correct me if I am wrong). The fluids serve the same purpose, lubricating the transmission and are subject to heat and pressure. I would use red line or mobil 1 auto trans fluid in your M3's transmission.

But I don't own an M3... yet

I use redline MT-90, just wondering if there was a reason they would recommend ATF. I need to change the fluid soon. I hate ordering redline over the internet, I was thinking using Mobil 1 ATF.

I can't answer WHY BMW specs ATF for the M3 tranny. BUT if the tranny specs Gear Lube (70 to 90 weight) it will be SUICIDE to change to ATF. They are not the same! Stick with what the owner's manual specs for the model/transmission.

I agree, it is best to stick with what the owners manuel says.

Yea you're wrong. ATF is A LOT thinner than 80w120 gear oil. I used to run ATF in my Nissan 5-spd a long long time ago and it made it last longer yet the transmission doesnt seem as precise. Since ATF is thinner it must transfer heat better so maybe thats why. If it says use it, then go for Mobil 1.
