big difference, SMG is the fastest type of transmission available (unless you can shift gears manually in 80 milliseconds) but they are not as smooth as automatic, smg also not a problem-free transmission, they are known to break down. Anyhow, I would rather go with manual.
i'm just waiting for wallie05 and ///m speed to bust through the thread any minute now.. [bmwdance]
smg is a technological marvel, i don't know if it'll be in my next car, but it's still nice. smg iii found in the m5 shifts in 60ms in the fastest mode!!
Wouldn't full auto be faster, than any human? I still don't get it, why bother with SMG. Seems to me that if you are going to the trouble of "shifting" just get the manual. Just my .02 My 2004 manual transmission bimmer is in the shop and my loaner is a z4 with steptonic. Not bad, my wife likes it. But I still prefer my car.

Dude, do some reading on SMG, it does not have torgue converter like automatic so there is direct connection between engine and the wheels, it is basically like manual transmission with clutch but it changes gears for you so you don't have to press the cluch pedal and select next gear - all you have to do is to press a button and it will shift it for you in 80ms, or you can put it in fully automatic mode and it will shift gears just like regular autimatic transmission. SMG derived from transmissions used in Formula 1.
he asked between full auto and steptronic. and yeah, full auto will probably be faster 0-60 because if you consider in steptronic you tap it, and then what seems like a full half second later it shifts it becomes hard to time the proper upshift. SMG is an entirely different torque converter free world

oooh right what is faster, this internal question everybody wants to know... auto.... steptronic... read-my-mind-tronic... auto-tronic-super-duper-smg... get it with manual, damn it!
i asked on kid in highschool about his integra piece of shit, asked him if it was an auto or a standard, his answer.... "its an auto, but i shift it like a stick"

lol, I heard it too big cars actually more suitable with automatic transmission but 3 series with auto and manual are basically 2 different cars, it is so much livelier with manual. When I test-drove 330 with automatic I was disappointed - it didn't feel any special to me, but then I test-drove 325ic with manual and I fell in love. Auto takes all the fun away.
Bit harsh don't you think? I really cannot understand all this Honda bashing crap. After all, it's BMW and Honda that always clean up at the annual "Engine Oscars".
