Hey Everybody,
I have a 1997 528i which has the GM 4-speed Auto Tranny in it. I thought I was cool with the auto when i bought the car, but now Im really over it lol. I was thinking about converting this car. I was wondering if anyone has done this before or if its too hard and I should just not do it... I know that Ill need to install the clutch pedal and linkage, but what else will I need to do with regard to the ecu and other computer systems? any help would be greatly appreciated :-D

Thanks!
Bryce

I never heard of anyone thinking they were cool with an AUTOMATIC transmission.

Anyways, you would have to swap the entire drivetrain - transmission, driveshaft, and differential (different ratio's). You would obviously need to install the clutch pedal and hydraulics, and get a new center console cut-out (or whatever you want to call it.)

Otherwise I don't think there is much more you would have to change.

I guess no one thinks this is a good idea??? lol
No, it definitely isn't. With cars much older than yours the talented DIY fan would come to terms (here in Europe it was rather common to swap an auto for a stick on 6er when the cursed 4HP22 failed) but the advent of integrated in-car electronics has ruled out this option.

Simply, such a convertions is economically not viable. At current prices you can get another E39 and still save some!
