Hey all

wish you all a very merry X mas and a happy new year.
Now let see if any one can help.

This is my first time having an Automatic tranny, I’ve been always driving standard BMW E36 and E46. And now I have the E30 Auto.
My understanding about auto tranny is, once you are on park you can not change to reverse or Drive without pushing the break and hold down the button under the knob right? But with my car I can go to R or D without doing any of the above. Is this a tranny problem or a sensor? Not to forget to mention that even when I’m driving on D I can easily just go to reverse and blew up my tranny.

Now let see what you got.

Cheers,

Ok maybe only for the newer japanees car you have to press the brake, but my button is not functioning.
well regarding how do I know if it goes to R position I tired it on my drive way and it goes.
it might be the sensor under the gear shift.
Thanks for the link

yeah, my button doesn't work that well either. But as far as I know, it doesn't matter if the brake is on when you go into reverse, it's just a good idea to have your car at a stop. The button needs to be pressed if it's going from P to R, but isn't necessary from R to D (at least mine doesn't need it)

Just make sure the car is at a complete stop and your foot is fully on the brake before moving out of neutral or park into any gear.
You shouldn't need to move the stick while under normal driving conditions anyway.
Happy christmas and a happy new year to you too!
