Bad Starter?

Today, I was going fast around a turn and lost control of the car and it ended up sliding sideways and then backwards and stalled out. After it finally stoped , I pushed it off the road and tried to start it, and it did nothing. So i opened the hood and listened to it when i tried to start it. All I heard was the faint clicking of the solonoid. The same thing happened after I put the new engine and tranny in, but eventually it turned over. After I got someone to help me to push start it, I came home and checked it out. I checked all the connections and put a charger on the battery and let it sit. Later on, I came back out and tried it and it didn't do anything, so I hit it with a hammer and it still didn't do anything. After that, I ran a wire directly to the starter and it didn't do anything. I would just replace it, because I have a spare one but its impossible to get to the bolts without taking the intake manifold and cooling lines out and I was trying to find an easy way out. Any ideas of what happened, or how to fix it?

Thanks,
Eric

Charhed the battery, then ran a voitage test on it, everything was fine. Yep, tried it and it works. Do you have any idea where the starter relay is located at?

Thanks,
Eric

It's either in with the fuses, or it's in the little relay box on the one strut tower. It's probably one of the 3 in the latter.

Tonight, I ran a few tests with a multi-tester and found out that I'm getting 13 volts to the starter, then I bypassed the solonoid with a wire and nothing happened. so I ran an ohms check from the starter to the tranny and engine block and got nothing. so, I'm thinking that the problem is that theres power going to it, but nowhere for it to go. Does this sound logical?

bad ground somewhere? I could be wrong but I think the starter has two positive cables and one negative? It's been so long since I've touched a starter on a bmw.

If it's anything at all like a starter on a GM car, then the ground is through the engine block. Make sure you check your engine to chassis ground straps.

Is the starter solenoid clicking when you turn the key?

It does ground through the block. The problem was a bad ground. there was poor contact between the starter and tranny, and the grounding wire on the block was corroded, so i made a new one with heavier gauge wire and slodered it instead of crimping it.

But you made it sound like the starter was grounded through a wire. [whip] So, I actually gave correct info! [rofl]
Hey I didn't specify which wire or where! You have to cover your ass like that, because of this site I have learned how to give good advice, and how to give some good non-advice.
