In this year my husband and I are expecting a new BMW and a new baby! Does anyone have experience with infant seats in the new 5 series? (Best fit, etc.)

Is there a website that compares the compatibility of various seats with the new 5 series?

Are there connectors in the rear seat for the child-seat base? In my 2002 530 they are there, small square loops in the fold between the seat bottom and back rest, kind of tight in that area so you have to feel for it. I have fold down seats so it might be different with regular seats. We have a Graco car seat with a base that I leave in the car. Makes my bimmer look less macho but what can you do... The base has a belt with hooks on it that will engage the metal loops I described and it is quite secure after everything was tightened. I have big hands so getting the hooks into the loop was a little difficult, so needless to say, once the base was installed it stays there--we have different bases for each vehicle. The 2002 325 has the same system.

Hope that helps. I'm not sure if the 2004 seat is much different but most cars I have looked at have similar systems.

Congrats of both new impending arrivals. I have two kids aged 4 and 2. My experience is with the larger Britax RoundAbout (?) seats, but only facing forward, not the rear facing of an infant seat. No problems at all taking the seats in or out though my seats are a bit older and do not have the new Latch system. Both seats easily fit in the trunk along with the stroller when I need the rear seats for adults.

Congrats and good luck with the new additions to your family.

I have a 2 year old, a newborn, and an '03 525. The Britax Roundabout fits just fine (forward facing) with room to spare even when the front seat is all the way back. For the newborn, our base and rear facing seat fit fine as well with the front seat almost all the way back.

The one thing I can't tell you about is the LATCH system. For some reason, I can't find the anchors. Drives me nuts. I just use the seat belts to hold the child seats in place. When you get your 5er, I suggest that you have your sales assoc specifically show you where the anchors are. I thought it would be really obvious, since there were flags showing the location for one anchor on each side of the backseat. I must really be dim, b/c I can't find the anchor even where the flags are.

Good luck and let me know how the LATCH system is working for you.

The anchors are deep between the seat base and back, just on the inside of where the seatbelt sticks up. You have to slide your fingers in there--it is tight in my car. The LATCH makes the base much more stable than using the seatbelt.

Thanks, DRWWE. I'll give it another shot. Your directions are already infinitely better than the owners manual.

Does anyone use a mat under the car seat so that the leather doesn't get damaged? I think I remember seeing such an item, but I haven't found it in any baby stores.

Ok...Almost ALL new BMW's have a system called ISOFIX in the back seat. I believe that is the "anchors" that everyone is referring to. I have a similar blessing as well...a fairly new baby and Brand New 530i. I bought my seat from the BMW dealership. Does not require any mats and it is a PERFECT fit. My daughter appears to be way more comfortable in this BMW car seat than her MAXI COSI. The BMW car seat comes with the clips for the ISOFIX system and is faily durable. The cost might not be effective for some...but then again I figured that if I could spring the cash for a new Bimmer...then I could spring the extra 400.00 for the car seat. Just my opinion. Check into it.

Does the seat from BMW come in matching leather??? For that cost it should. If so I might ask them about infant and toddler seats once my daughter gets a little bigger.

I'll look into them. We are getting ready to move up to a larger seat in a few months.... Did you find out about it online or did you have to ask the dealer?

The reason I like the Graco so much is it fits into a stroller so when my wife takes our daughter places it is easy to pop the stroller out of the trunk and slip the seat into the stroller.

The dealer has an accessories brochure and they have all the carseats for kids in it.
They sure look nice and hey, if you can afford a nice beamer, it's almost mandatory to have the matching child seat :)
